A group of seven accused individuals of German far-left group stand trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist group together with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the network was behind targeting locations in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the American move and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat from the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or are in custody.”
